I am truly heartbroken by this news. I met kids from Looma and nearby Kulkarriya on our recent family trip across the stunning lands of the Kimberley. These beautiful playful friendly kids, who share joy with their smiles, played with my kids. It makes me sob to think that one of these children was hurting so much, in the depths of despair they could even think of taking their own life. I’ve been there and it is a deep and dark place NO child should ever experience.
AUSTRALIANS we are facing a National Mental Health Crisis – in all age groups and all demographics of Australians. Sadly this not only includes our first Australians, but is many times worse for Aboriginals.
I do not profess to understand the complexity of mental health issues in Aboriginal Communities. But I do know that mental illness does not discriminate and without the right professional ongoing support no-one can recover and the problem grows. The statistics are staggering, almost incomprehensible.
“Suicide was the second leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 14 and under in 2014, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday. Indigenous children in that age group were 8.8 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to take their own life.”
I feel overwhelmed by this situation we are in as a country where 6 Australians take there lives by suicide EACH DAY! Including children as young as 10.
Yes, we are all talking about Mental Illness, reducing the stigma, asking R U Ok?
BUT we need ACTION NOW! We need the Government to see this National Health CRISIS and put money where there mouth is.
We need MORE trained health PROFESSIONALS to Recognise the signs, Treat the illness, Support the sufferers and their families/communities.
We need more in depth TRAINING for our health professionals based on the experiences of those with mental illnesses, to improve treatment and support programs outcomes.
We need more BEDS/WARDS for sufferers in crisis, so they are not discharged to the street only hours after an attempt on their own life because they are not high risk enough! EVERY LIFE MATTERS 😥
We ALL MUST ACT NOW.
We need to demand ACTION from our politicians.
WE ALL NEED HOPE!
